Least Restrictive Environment

Kim began attending school in this district when she was in Kindergarten. She'd attended preschool at Golden Rule. Since Kim is not always able to distinguish appropriate behavior from inappropriate behavior, we decided long ago to have her attend a typical school where she would be exposed to more normal behavior.

Over the years Kim has been included in regular classes with some time in the resource room. There have been times when the inclusion has been beneficial and times when she has just "been" there. While we understand that Kim needs a more functional curriculum, we also feel that inclusion, whenever possible, is the best choice for her. She picks up information you may not initially think she has the ability to understand. The benefit to her far outweighs the inappropriate behavior she picks up when exposed to other children with special needs, especially those with behavior problems. If she spends the majority of her school day with students who may have inappropriate behavior, she will have more behavior problems.

Kim has the capability to live and work in the "regular" world, so we feel she needs to be educated in it whenever possible with the proper supports and services necessary to make it a positive learning experience for her.
